Lines to Lore

How poems written about real-life loss, tragedy, heartbreak & surviving S.A. inspired a Trilogy.

When Poems Become Legends

The "Lines & Lore" series is loosely inspired by the poems of author C.J. Fortin that were written to process loss & love, to heal from surviving S.A. and other darker moments in the author's life.

These poems also speak of hope & finding light even in the darkest times, even if you have to be that light yourself.

From the prologue, it becomes clear that lines of the poems below are woven together in a story that explores adult themes, such as S.A., Mental Health, Violence, and other themes not suitable for those under the age of eighteen.

For a Boy I Love

C. J. Fortin | January 3, 2023.

I loved you then,
I love you now;
Those eyes so blue & hair so brown;
You picked me up when I was down.

Then a darkness set in,
His power falling down covering us in pain,
I could not stay to watch as you drown in the rain.
I’d have drowned with you;
Again and again.

Oh, I should’ve stayed,
Maybe it would be different today.
Would you have made it past 28?
I came back;
too late.

I ran off , I let you down-
I thought we would come back around.

In my tears I sit & I drown -
as you dream;
not a sound.

Never again will I hear the voice of a boy I loved;
a regret I will carry,
not one I will shove.

Our secrets run deep;
more than meets the eye-
if I know one thing,
it’s the truth,
unlike us,
never dies.

I was your secret &
I kept them too ;
what good does that do,
if it’s all without you?

Our touch may not meet;
But, I feel your spark;
I know that it’s you,
speaking to me from the dark.

So, I will not rest,
until you can too;
these secrets no longer serve me or you.

You weren’t my forever;
but, you are my always.

I love you,
I’m sorry;

Let me tell our story.

Death of a Rainbow

C. J. Fortin | November 2024

After a storm clears, a beautiful rainbow appears.
Its radiance full of pride.
It colours the sky in love:
Seen by all near and far,
a brilliant daytime star.
Then day turns to night, And try as you might,
The rainbow is nowhere in sight.
The death of my rainbow.
Though death is just that;
A tragic yet not final act.
For with the death of a rainbow,
Comes the birth of radiant stars.
Ones to light the way through the dark,
Full of radiance,
Full of pride.
If you were lucky enough to hold it,
You held heaven in your arms.
A loving reminder to look up to the sky.
And not to fear the dark.
I learned to see and dance with you amongst the stars.
The day my rainbow died.

Set Fire to Rome

C. J. Fortin | November 12, 2024

The emperor stole the heart I called my home.

A warmth replaced with a chill to the bone.

All I was left was a rage deeper than I've ever known.

In that moment, the emperor reaped what he had sown.

Sometimes, a broken heart is all it takes to set fire to Rome.
